Men are tough and strong, they were built to protect those they love and care for those in need. I have seen lots of men in the jail bureau but not so typical with this one. His physique will intimidate you without a doubt and most men dreamt for a body like his. SJO2 Percival M Canono II proved he’s on the upper strata when it comes to body built which gave him opportunities to participate in several bodybuilding competitions. It’s a sport and a lifestyle that drove him to achieve such physique which requires a lot of discipline and determination.

He’s a father of three children and happily married to one of our dedicated Jail Officers, SJO3 Fritzie D Canono assigned at BJMP Regional Office VIII. He’s presently assigned at Tacloban City Jail-Male Dorm and a member of the BJMP Region VIII STAR Team. It suits him well, being the image of an elite team ready to act on any jail disturbance as mandated by the bureau’s policy. He’s been bringing the good name of the jail bureau whenever he participates to local and national competitions.

He already bagged nine awards in all of the competitions he joined such as the Ginoong Leyte Champion Small Division, Mr. Sangyaw National Bodybuilding Competition 2018, 5th Place Medium Division and 4th Place Physique Small Category, Mr. Mambajao Maasin 2nd Place and 3rd Place Open Physique Competition. Recently, he won as 3rd Runner Up in the Open Category and 4th Runner Up in Tall Physique during the Mr. Sangyaw 2019 National Bodybuilding Competition last June 27, 2019 held at Robinsons North, Tacloban City. He is set to join the Mr. Philippines Bodybuilding 2019 this coming July 20, 2019 in Metro Manila.

Knowing his great accomplishments, I interviewed him for me to know more about his way of life and as a family man:

Q. What are your preparations behind the muscular physique?
A. I do workouts three hours a day four times a week and eat more protein than carbs and preferred root crops instead of rice, no sweetened and oily foods without drinking any liquor and soft drinks. I made sure that I do have enough eight-hour sleep daily and lastly, I always pray before going to sleep to thank Him for the good health.

Q. What made you decide to join the bodybuilding contests?
A. As my kids grow, I decided to join bodybuilding competitions for them to show the discipline of bodybuilding. I want to influence my kids in such a way of living a healthy lifestyle as we age. Also, it’s also my purpose to tell the community what BJMP is and let our personnel be known thru this. This is my own little way of helping the bureau be closer to the community thru every bodybuilding competition I joined.

Q. Who inspires you the most in continuing your passion and why?
A. My family inspires me in continuing my passion for bodybuilding. I want to influence my wife, who is currently battling against breast cancer, the benefits of positivity, just like in bodybuilding, “No Pain, No Gain”. My eldest son is also now into bodybuilding and he’s already preparing for the next year’s competition. Lastly, I want to inspire my colleagues in the bureau to engage in any field of sports, workouts, and fitness.

Q. As a husband and a father, how do you manage family moments with gym training?
A. As a father, you have to manage your time between family and gym routine. I have no exact gym routine, if we have family outings in the morning, I do my workout in the evening. If on duty, I do it during my off-hours. I always find time to work out without any excuses.

Q. We know men are tough, can you share with us the struggles in your life which may inspire others to continue the fight in their own life’s glitches?
A. Everyone will pass through trials. Currently, my wife is battling breast cancer but it didn’t stop me from pursuing my passion. This gives me more faith with the guidance of our Lord in further strengthening our family. If trials come into our lives, never let them overcome yours, instead pray and ask for help from our Savior. Now, I’m preparing for July 20, 2019 Mr. Philippines, International Federation of Body Building (IFBB) sanctioned competition.

Q. What are your tips to those who aspire to be like you?
A. Discipline yourself from all those cravings. Eat healthy foods and do workouts at least four times a week. Have enough rest instead of drinking and time management between work, family, and workout.

Q. Who is SJO2 Canono behind the muscle?
A. SJO2 Canono behind the muscle is a loving husband to my wife and a provider to my kids. I’m easy to be with my comrades. I’m living a simple life even in the workplace, with strong faith to our Almighty Father. I take time to go to the gym to workout which is my stress reliever.

After the interview, I definitely came to know more about sir Canono, his passion and his undying love for his family, taking our Lord into the center of their relationship. I do need to be fit soon, hopefully! Truly, a tough man not just physically, morally and spiritually. What more can I say? Kudos to our man behind the muscle.
